Śikṣāṣṭakam Will Become Revealed In Your Heart.

Śikṣāṣṭakam Will Become Revealed In Your Heart.

Founder-Ācārya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda

The following Radhadesh Retreat lecture on Śikṣāṣṭakam Lectures – Part 2 – Radhadesh Retreat Day 5 was given by His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami in Radhadesh, Belgium, July 2011.

Hare Kṛṣṇa Kīrtana and Jaya Rādhā Mādhava kīrtana

Gaur Premānande Hari Hari bol.

namo oṁ vishnu paḍaya krishna preṣṭhāya bhūtale
śrīmate bhaktivedanta swami iti nāmine

namaste sārasvate deve gaura vāṇī pracāriṇe
nirviśeṣa śūnyavādi pāścātya deśa tāriṇe

Śrīla Prabhupāda ki jaya.

Śrī Śrī Śikṣāṣṭakam ki jaya.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: So, so far we have done up to the sixth verse. Now we are left with two more out of śikṣāṣṭakam. The seventh verse goes like “ yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvam govinda-viraheṇa me”.

So will you try to memorize this verse also? Did you memorize the last three verses from yesterday?

Devotee: [Unclear].

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: How many of you have done that? Very good.

[Guru Mahārāja recites the words of the first line of seventh verse of śikṣāṣṭakam (yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam) everybody repeats three times].

Okay close the book. How many of you can recite this line?

Devotee: yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam [and other devotees recite three times]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. Now how many of you can recite it? Raise your hands.

Devotee: yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. I can see that you are doing it right now. And what about you Sanjaya.

Sanjaya Prabhu: [Unclear]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Anyway, it’s alright

[Guru Mahārāja recites the words of second line of seventh verse of śikṣāṣṭakam (śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvam govinda-viraheṇa me) everybody repeats them three times]. How does it feel like? Ravi, you want to give it a try?

Ravi Prabhu: śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvam govinda-viraheṇa me

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. Okay [Laughter] Rāmānanda.

Rāmānanda Prabhu: śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvam govinda-viraheṇa me

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay. How many of you remember the first line now? Okay, Ārādhana.

Ārādhana Mātājī: śūnyāyitaṁ jagat sarvam govinda-viraheṇa me

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay, this is the second line. First line?

Devotee: yugāyitaṁ nimeṣeṇa cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. See with a little effort, we can very easily memorize these verses and it is very important that you… at least śikṣāṣṭakam you memorize, all the eight verses of śikṣāṣṭakam. Because you can see the śikṣāṣṭakam is the very essence of what we are practicing. What we are practicing, the entire process and entire culmination of our practice is there in these eight verses. It is not that by reading these verses we will be able to understand so much. You know what will be the real revelation? When will be the real understanding? The real understanding will be revealed in the heart. As you keep chanting the Holy Name, this  sikastakam will become revealed in your heart. After all transcendental knowledge is revealed in the heart. Can transcendental knowledge be acquired intellectually? No. it is not a matter of intellectual perception or intellectual assimilation. Transcendental knowledge, divya jñāna hṛde prokāśito will be revealed in the heart. How it will be revealed in the heart? As the heart becomes purified the transcendental knowledge will be revealed in the heart. And now you go back to again how will the heart be purified? Ceto darpaṇa mārjanam, by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa the heart will be purified and as the heart becomes purified, the Holy Name and the effect of the Holy Name will become manifest in the heart, will be revealed in the heart. Therefore it is only a matter waiting to receive the mercy. In the form of the mercy of the Lord the knowledge will be revealed. Bhakti already includes knowledge. When you take to bhakti, when you take to devotional service, you do not have to separately cultivate knowledge. Study yes, that is there. You have to study but the knowledge will automatically be there as you progress in your spiritual life. The knowledge will automatically be revealed in the heart. Bhaktidevī, Bhaktidevī has two sons. You know who are those two sons of Bhaktidevī.

Devotee: Jñāna and Vairāgya

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Very good. Jñāna and vairāgya, Knowledge and renunciation. As the bhakti develops in the heart, knowledge will be revealed in the heart and renunciation will automatically appear. That means when you get the higher taste you will automatically give up the lower taste. When you have a nice wonderful plate of mahāprasāda, will you feel like eating some rotten food? Similarly, as we develop our taste for spiritual life, our attachment to material nature will automatically become, will automatically disappear. I was about to say automatically reduce. It will not reduce, it will eventually disappear. So this is how effective the process is. Practice the process, the result will be there. Water the tree, the fruits will be there. What kind of tree we are talking about here? This tree is the tree of devotion,  bhaktilatābhaktilatā. And as you properly cultivate the tree, as you properly water the tree and take care of the tree, take care of the plant, what will happen? The plant will not only grow, but eventually the plant will be decorated with beautiful flowers and fruits. What is the flower of  this  bhaktilatā? The flower of bhaktilatā is transcendental emotions, bhava. And what is the fruit of bhaktilatā? The fruit of bhaktilatā is Kṛṣṇa prema. So Chaitanya Mahāprabhu came to distribute the fruit. Namo mahā vadānyāya Kṛṣṇa prema pradāya te. He came to distribute Kṛṣṇa prema and Kṛṣṇa prema is the fruit of this bhaktilatā, the devotional creeper. So, so gradual elevation in spiritual life is due to the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra. It has so been wonderfully described by Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu. Sixth verse described what? Mahāprabhu representing our situation is saying, “When it will happen to us? When will tears come streaming down my eyes?” Nayanam galad aśru dhārāya, nayanam galad aśru dhārāya, when will tears come streaming down my eyes. Vadanaṁ gadagada rudhaya girā, when will my voice be choked? Pulakair nichitam vapuḥ kadā when will the hairs of my body stand on end due to the experience of ecstasy. tava nāma grahaṇe bhaviyasti, by chanting Your Holy Name. But what verse is saying? This verse is saying nimeṣeṇa yugaitam cakṣuṣā prāvṛṣāyitam. Due to Your separation I am considering a moment to be like 12 years or more. Nimeṣeṇanimeṣa means? Let’s see. There is somebody with the name Nimeṣa.

Devotees: [Laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Whether he knows the meaning of the word.

Devotee: Moment

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Moment. Okay. How is this moment calculated, do you know Nimeṣa? Nimeṣa literally means ‘wink of an eye’. The time that takes your eye to wink, close your eyes and open your eyes, that’s a nimeṣa. So, this closing of my eyes will appear to be like twelve years, yugāyitaṁ. So this is a feeling due to the separation from Kṛṣṇa.

Love has two aspects. Love has one aspect that is union and the other is separation. Actually everybody wants to be united with the object of love. But at the same time there is separation. You can’t always have the union. Rather separation makes love even stronger, even deeper, even more relishable. So, there are two, these two aspects of loving relationship, prema issambhog and vipralambhaSambhoga is the stage of union: when both the lover and beloved are together, that is the phase of sambhoga. And when the lover and beloved, when they are separated, that is the stage of separation or vipralambha. Now of these two, which one is deeper? In which aspect love is deeper?

Devotee: In separation

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: In separation. So, Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is describing this feeling of separation, govinda viraheṇa meviraha and milan. This expression  vipralambha  and sambhoga are a little complex expression. But the simple expression in Sanskrit is: viraha and milanMilan, this word is very known commonly, those who know Hindi or any language, Milan, ‘meeting’, ‘union’, milan and viraha means ‘separation’. So separation not in that way, not a separation in divorce [Laughter].

Devotees: [Laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: But it is a separation of physical distance. But that- in English also we have an expression. Who remembers that? Distance makes the heart grow fonder. So distance makes the heart grow fonder. And so what is the situation of every one of us in this material nature? We all are separated from Kṛṣṇa. We all are separated from Kṛṣṇa. So we are actually in a natural stage or natural state of vipralambha. The only thing we don’t have is love for Kṛṣṇa. We are separated but don’t have the love for Kṛṣṇa. Now if we can develop our love for Kṛṣṇa, then what will happen? We will immediately experience the feeling of very intense feeling of separation. That feeling of separation has been very wonderfully displayed by Chaitanya Mahāprabhu in the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Mahāprabhu was always crying: “Where is Kṛṣṇa, where is Kṛṣṇa?” Specially after Chaitanya Mahāprabhu went to Gāya and got initiated by Īśvara Purī, then He started to display this ecstatic symptom which made everybody feel that Chaitanya Mahāprabhu became mad. Common people started to think that Chaitanya Mahāprabhu became mad. They took Him to the doctor and the doctor also said that there is vāyu roga. The disease caused by the imbalance of air in the body. There are five kinds of air that control the activities of the body. Our mental process also is controlled by the air. So if the air is also imbalanced then one becomes insane. So they thought that Chaitanya Mahāprabhu became insane. But it was not insanity, but it was ecstasy. Ecstasy and insanity sometimes may appear to be alike, just as sunrise and sunset may appear to be alike. Don’t the sunrise and sunset look similar but they are diametrically opposite. Similarly ecstasy due to intense Kṛṣṇa-prema and insanity appears to be alike. And in that state of insanity Chaitanya Mahāprabhu or in a state of ecstasy Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu was crying all the time. kāhāṅ jaon kāhāṅ pahon vrajendra nandana. Where can I find the son of Nanda Mahārāja? Where can I find the son of Nanda Mahārāja. Because due his separation my heart is cracking, my heart is breaking, vrajendra nandan binā phatem mora man. That’s how He was lamenting all the time. And then also during the last twelve years of His stage being situated in Jagannātha Purī, Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu displayed that very intense mood of separation, which has been very nicely described in Chaitanya Caritāmṛta in Antya-lila. Mahāprabhu was – His body became, His body became transformed in this intense separation from Kṛṣṇa. Sometimes His hands and feet used to be withdrawn within the body like a tortoise, Kūrma rūpa. And sometimes His body was large that it was 14 to 15 feet long. He is already about 7 feet. So this is how He was displaying His transcendental ecstasy. Sometimes in ecstasy He fainted in the river, in the ocean. And He actually He was in the ocean, He drowned in ecstasy but the fisherman, when they were fishing they got Him on the net. And they couldn’t pull Him out. After a lot of struggle when they pulled him out, they thought it was something unusual because they never seen such a large body. They thought it was a ghost or something. And not only that. Because of contact with Him, they came in contact with Chaitanya Mahāprabhu’s body, just by touching His body, they also started to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. They also became mad. And so this is how Mahāprabhu was displaying His ecstatic symptoms due to vipralambha during His last days, during His last years. And He would also display His ecstatic symptoms in a sort of feeling of union, when He would see Jagannātha He would be so happy. In front of Jagannātha’s chariot He was dancing and dancing… And in ecstasy His voice got choked. Vadanaṁ gadagada rudhaya girayaGirā, ‘voice’ is gadagada. Like He tries to speak but He cannot speak as if it is choked. The sound is not coming out properly. And in that state He couldn’t say Jagannātha, a simple word like Jagannātha, He could not utter. He would say Ja Ja Ja Ja. The word was faulty. So this is what happens. These are the symptoms of ecstasy due to the experience of loving relationship or experiencing the love for the Lord.

So, now it is happening. Previously it said when it will happen. But this verse is describing that this is happening. Now what is happening? Feeling Your separation: “O Govinda I am considering a moment to be like twelve years. Tears are flowing from my eyes like torrents of rain and I am feeling all vacant in this world, in Your absence.” So this is Chaitanya Mahāprabhu’s mood. What mood is this? This mood is the mood of vipralambha. What is the mood of vipralambha? The way Rādhārāṇī is feeling due to the separation from Kṛṣṇa. Rādhārāṇī is feeling this. This is not Kṛṣṇa. This is Rādhārāṇī. Kṛṣṇa assumed the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī to understand what is this love for Kṛṣṇa like. He wanted to understand three things: śrī-rādhāyāḥ praṇaya-mahimā kīdṛśo. What’s the glory of Rādhārāṇī’s love for Me? vānayaivā-

svādyo yenādbhuta-madhurimā kīdṛśo vā madīyaḥ, what kind of sweetness is there so that Rādhārāṇī becomes so attracted to Me? And saukhyaṁ cāsyā mad-anubhavataḥ, by loving Me how does she feel? What kind of happiness does she experience? In order to understand these three things: the glories of Rādhārāṇī’s love, what kind of sweetness is there in Him that attracts Rādhārāṇī and by loving Him, what kind of happiness does Rādhārāṇī experience? To understand these three things Kṛṣṇa assumed the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī because without assuming the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, He couldn’t understand although He is the all knowing, the all cognizant Supreme Personality of Godhead but these three things He couldn’t understand. Therefore He had to assume the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. rādhā-bhāva-dyuti-suvalitaṁ naumi kṛṣṇa-svarūpam, Kṛṣṇa in the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and in the complexion of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu. So Kṛṣṇa wanted to know these three things, therefore He had to become Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī in simple words. rādhā-bhāva-dyuti-suvalitaṁ naumi kṛṣṇa-svarūpam and How did He do that? śacīgarbha-sindhau harīnduḥ, just as moon appear due to the churning of milk ocean, similarly churning the ocean of the womb of mother Śacī, the moon of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu appeared. So, Kṛṣṇa is experiencing this very, very intense loving experience, mahābhāva, rasaraja mahābhāvaRasaraja is Kṛṣṇa and personification of mahābhāva, the highest transcendental emotions, loving mood, the highest loving mood is Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Only She experiences this mahābhāva. And now Kṛṣṇa since He appeared in the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, He is experiencing in the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Kṛṣṇa is not there. He is searching for Kṛṣṇa “Where is Kṛṣṇa, where is Kṛṣṇa?”

And He would display these emotions. When He would see Lord Jagannātha especially when He is taking Lord Jagannātha to the Guṇḍicā temple during ratha yatra because ratha yatra is the festival of the occasion when Kṛṣṇa is being taken from Kuruksetra to Vṛndāvana. Kṛṣṇa is gone. Kṛṣṇa left Vṛndāvana; went to Mathurā; from Mathurā He went to Dvārakā. And from Dvārakā He came to Kurukṣetra on the occasion of the solar eclipse and the vraja-vāsīs also went to Kurukṣetra.

The day after the solar eclipse when everyone is preparing to leave, the Gopīs got the message that Kṛṣṇa is there. Kṛṣṇa also came to Kurukṣetra. So when they heard that Kṛṣṇa was there, they ran to meet Kṛṣṇa. And at that time Kṛṣṇa was preparing to leave. He has just got into the chariot and He is about to leave. At that time the Gopīs arrived there along with the other residents of Vṛndāvana. After 100 years of separation they met. Those who could not even tolerate the separation caused by the winking of the eyes, you remember that? The Gopīs cursed Brahmā or rather criticized Brahmā, “That what kind of body you created, the body that need the winking of the eyes. And because of the winking of the eyes, we can’t see Kṛṣṇa for that moment.” They couldn’t bear the separation caused by the wink of their eyes. And now they are- they couldn’t see Kṛṣṇa for 100 years. During that time they didn’t cook food. They didn’t eat anything. They lost interest in everything. So after 100 years of separation they met. This has been described in Chaitanya Caritāmṛta. Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī was not happy. Although She met Kṛṣṇa after 100 years. Her feeling is: “This is not the Kṛṣṇa that I knew. My Kṛṣṇa doesn’t dress like this. He is a prince. My Kṛṣṇa is a cowherd boy. He wears a peacock feather on His head and this person is wearing a crown on His head. He wears forest flower garland, garland made of forest flowers and He is wearing all these fancy ornaments. That Kṛṣṇa carries a- He wears a yellow silk cloth and He is dressed in royal robes and My Kṛṣṇa has a flute in His hand and This person is dressed up with bows and arrows and sword and spears and My Kṛṣṇa is on the bank of Yamunā in the forest of Vṛndāvana and This character is surrounded by all these elephants and horses, trumpeting and winding; and these royal personalities surrounding Him.

So the Gopīs could understand the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. So understanding the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī that means Rādhārāṇī is not satisfied to meet Kṛṣṇa in this way, in this situation. So, what did they do? They got hold of the chariot, Kṛṣṇa’s chariot and started to pull it towards Vṛndāvana. So that is ratha yatra festival. So now Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is taking Jagannātha to Vṛndāvana. So in ecstasy, in the mood of Rādhārāṇī He is dancing.

So vipralambha-sambhogaviraha– milan. And then the eight verse is describing the mood of a devotee when he develops his love for Kṛṣṇa, prema, especially the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām adarśanān marma-hatāṁ karotu vā yathā tathā vā vidadhātu lampaṭo mat-prāṇa-nāthas tu sa eva nāparaḥ.āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām. Even if you handle me roughly or you embrace me. adarśanān marma-hatāṁ karotu vā, marma-hatāṁ means ‘break’ marma means ‘heart’ and āhata means ‘hurt’. If you hurt my heart and if you break my heart, adarśanān not by giving Your darśanayathā tathā vā vidadhātu lampaṭo, do the way whichever way You want to act because You are a completely independent personality and He is using the word lampaṭo. What is the meaning of the word lampaṭo?

Devotee: Debauchee.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Debauchee, a debauchee. He is calling Him a debauchee, a transcendental debauchee.

Devotees: [Laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Śiśupāla also called Kṛṣṇa a debauchee and Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is also calling Him a debauchee [Laughter]. Is it the same? No. this is the mood of
Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Like, okay, if you are running after other women then what can be done? You are the completely independent Supreme Personality but still mat-prāṇa-nāthas tu sa eva nāparaḥ, You are the Lord of my heart. Besides You I do not know anyone. I know no one but Kṛṣṇa as my Lord. Who is saying that? Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is saying that. So we have to understand that Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is Kṛṣṇa but Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is Kṛṣṇa and Rādhārāṇī together. Śrī kṛṣṇa Chaitanya rādhā kṛṣṇa nāhi anya. Śrī Kṛṣṇa Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is none other than Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa combined. I know no one but Kṛṣṇa as my Lord and He shall remain so even if He handles me roughly by His embrace or makes me broken hearted by not being present before me. He is completely free to do anything and everything for He is always my worshipful Lord unconditionally.

So this is the mood of a devotee. Ultimately devotee doesn’t demand anything from Kṛṣṇa. In this respect Prabhupāda gives the example that a child who is not very obedient to the father, will ask the father give me this, give me that. But when the child is good and obedient then he doesn’t ask anything from the father. Rather he accepts whatever the father does to him because he knows that his father is the ultimate well wisher. Whatever his father does is for his benefit. Similarly a devotee at an initial stage, at an immature stage, he may ask Kṛṣṇa for so many things, but at a mature stage he doesn’t ask for anything rather he says “Okay, do whatever you want to do.” Or this is the consideration of real love. In real love there is no such demand rather acceptance of the way the beloved acts.

So these are the eight verses of śikṣāṣṭakam. So once again please try to memorize these verses. Please try to understand these verses. Make it a point to regularly read them, consult them, discuss about them. And in this way try to develop your attachment to the Holy Name which began with ceto darpaṇa mārjanam. From ceto darpaṇa mārjanam to āśliṣya va pada ratam. They all will act just we have to chant the Holy Name without offenses. So, tomorrow will be we won’t have any class, right? What time we are to go?

Devotee: at 07h30.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: At 07h30 in the morning. Tomorrow will be going to Cologne for ratha yatra. And the whole day we will practically spend there and the day after tomorrow we will have another session. In that I will discuss the śikṣāṣṭakam, the summary of śikṣāṣṭakam which has been given by Bhaktivinoda Thakur. He is very beautifully describing the effect of the Holy Name, the glory of Holy Name. Does anybody have any question or comment? Yes.

Devotee: Mahārāja, you very beautifully described how Lord Chaitanya’s love towards Kṛṣṇa and His relationship [Unclear].

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Okay. Very good point. Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu’s appearance has two aspects. One aspect of Mahāprabhu’s appearance is to distribute Kṛṣṇa prema and the other aspect, this distribution of Kṛṣṇa prema is the external aspect and the internal aspect of Chaitanya Mahāprabhu’s appearance is to understand the love of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī for Kṛṣṇa. So, Mahāprabhu travelling all over India distributed Kṛṣṇa Consciousness fulfilling the external aspect but for twelve years staying in Gambhīra in Jagannātha Purī, He relished the internal aspect. The other aspect is distribution of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. jāre dekho, tāre kāho kṛṣṇa-upadeśa āmāra ājñāya guru hañā taro ei deśa, becoming the jagat guru Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu delivered the whole world by distributing Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. That has been described through one verse as ‘anarpita-carīṁ cirāt karuṇayāvatīrṇaḥ kalau’ in order to distribute something that He didn’t do for many, many, for a long, long time, for one thousand catur-yugas. In order to distribute that, He appeared. Anarpita-carīṁ cirāt karuṇayāvatīrṇaḥ kalau. He appeared very mercifully in the age of Kali. What is that? Samarpayitum unnatojjvala-rasāṁ sva-bhakti-śriyam, to distribute His own devotion in the highest and most brilliant mellow which is jaya jayojjwala-rasa sarvarasasar. parakīyā-bhāve jāhā brajete pracār which is the loving relationship that is manifest in Vṛndāvana through parakīya bhava. Loving relationship between a boy and a girl who are not married, that relationship, with the gopīs of Vṛndāvana. So Kṛṣṇa came to reveal that love of Vraja. And that is what He is distributing. Come, take it and become qualified to enter into Vṛndāvana. Yes…

Devotee: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja. How to distinguish between fake….

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: [Laughter]. How to distinguish? You see it is difficult to distinguish the fake stuff until you see it in action, right? The action will be different. Like for example, you get, nowadays you see fake fruits, looks exactly like apple, right? But you bite onto it; will it satisfy your hunger? Will there be any juice into it? Although it apparently looks like that sometimes it looks even more real than [Laughter] the real apple, right? So that’s the difference between the fake and genuine. The fake display of these ecstatic symptoms that means without really experiencing it, externally you are showing that you got it, right? What are ecstatic symptoms? The internal love that is experienced in the heart and the ecstasy resulting out of that, that ecstasy is manifested externally through the body in the form of those eight kind of ecstatic symptoms. They are the symptoms. They are not the real stuff. The real stuff is Kṛṣṇa prema, right? Now if one is displaying those, artificially displaying the ecstatic symptoms without experiencing the love for Kṛṣṇa internally, internally they will remain empty, right? Externally they may get some adoration and appreciation and worship because of the display, but Kṛṣṇa will not be available to them. Now what is important? Recognition and worship from others or recognition from Kṛṣṇa. Naturally the goal of life is to be recognized by Kṛṣṇa not some cheap recognition from outsiders.

Devotee: Did Śrīla Prabhupāda ever express the symptoms of ecstasy?

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Prabhupāda used to hide it. A pure devotee does. Especially in public they do not want to display and Prabhupāda himself said, “When you have something very precious, do you want to go and display it in the market place? You protect it. You hide it.” If you have a lot of money do you go and blow your trumpet? Then the income tax people will come and get you. So you rather hide it, don’t tell it anybody, right? Yes, two hands got up simultaneously. Okay I will take first Prema Pradip and then I will take your, the one who is standing behind.

Devotee: Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja. Lord Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa Themselves. So when Rādhā feels separation from Kṛṣṇa, Lord Kṛṣṇa is inside, Lord Chaitanya is Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa Himself, so how would Rādhā feel separation from Kṛṣṇa, as Kṛṣṇa is behind there?

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: That is love [Laughter], right? There is no logical understanding of why there should be any feeling of separation from Kṛṣṇa. That’s what Uddhava tried to make the Gopīs understand. Kṛṣṇa sent Uddhava to Vṛndāvana. The purpose actually was to teach Uddhava a lesson because Uddhava was very proud, Uddhava was feeling little proud. So Kṛṣṇa detected that. So Kṛṣṇa told Uddhava, “Uddhava, you see these Gopīs in Vṛndāvana, they are just crying for Me. So why don’t you go and give them some advice and tell them: “Don’t feel so bad for Me.” So Uddhava went to Vṛndāvana and he started to tell the Gopīs, “Why you are feeling the separation. Kṛṣṇa is the Supersoul. He is in your heart. There is no separation as such. As the Supersoul He is omnipresent. So you try to feel His presence in that way.” Do you know what the Gopīs said? “Uddhava keep your knowledge to yourself.”

Devotees: [Laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: “You do not know what love is. That’s why you are speaking like this. You do not know what love is.” So this is love. There is no room for reasoning. Like love is blind. Yes.

Devotee: Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja. It seems like …. in Tulasī prayers every living entity….in Tulasī prayers we ask to become Tulasī Mahārāṇī’s maid servant.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: No, Tulasī Mahārāṇī’s maid servant, Kṛṣṇa’s maid servant.

Devotee: Kṛṣṇa’s.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Also Tulasī Mahārāṇī’s maid servant is also fine. Because to be the maidservant of Kṛṣṇa’s servant is even higher. So, yes, our svarūpa, I think I will see if whether I got your question right. Your question is that everybody has his svarūpa then why we are praying to Tulasī Mahārāṇī to give us service to Kṛṣṇa or make us servants of Kṛṣṇa?

Devotee: [Unclear]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: O

Devotee: [Unclear]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes. So leave it up to Kṛṣṇa whatever it is. But since you are asking her, then you know like, this is in that mood, he is praying like that. sakhir anugata koro, Sevā-adhikāra diye koro nija dāsī yes, that is actually Tulasī Mahārāṇī. Koro nija dāsī make me your maid servant. So, one way to look at it is because Tulasī Mahārāṇī is female it is better to serve her as a maid servant than a male servant, because male servant won’t be able to serve Tulasī Mahārāṇī so nicely. So, that’s why koro nija dāsī. Thank you. Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Yes. Okay I got [Unclear] first and after that I will take Ārādhana and then third hand came up here. Okay, Vinod Mañjarī and these three will be the last. O Yadurāṇī was. Okay fourth Yadurāṇī.

Devotee: [Unclear]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes.

Devotee: [Unclear]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: There are yuga. The word yuga can mean many things. The smallest concept of yuga is twelve years and the larger concept of yuga is  caturyuga,  divyayuga that is four yugas together that means 4 billion 320 million years. So Prabhupāda is translating with a smallest concept of yuga. Okay, give her the mike.

Devotee: Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja. How can we understand the feeling of union in separation and feeling of separation in union?

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: You have to be in love [Laughter].

Devotees: [Laughter]

Devotee: Transcendental feeling I should say of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Not that, I mean. It is not a matter of something artificially that. In love, due to separation the memory becomes so intense that one feels that the person is already there and when the person is there, you are with the person, then there is an anxiety of the heart what will happen if he goes away from here. So that’s why it is said it is a very unique consideration of love. Vinod Mañjarī. Take the mike.

Devotee: Guru Mahārāja I just wanted to ask how we can understand how Kṛṣṇa needed to understand the love of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī if He is all knowing. [Unclear]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes, to do it in a real way, He became Rādhārāṇī. Kṛṣṇa is omnipotent. He can do anything. So, He can become Rādhārāṇī also. So that’s what He did. Became Rādhārāṇī that is Chaitanya Mahāprabhu.

Devotee: If He is all knowing…

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: He is all knowing but this loving exchange. If we leave it at that then where is the question of falling in love with Rādhārāṇī? He is omnipotent why does He need? But still Kṛṣṇa needs it. Because this is the aspect of hlādinī śakti. Joy, Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Enjoyer. So if He is the Supreme Enjoyer then there has to be the arrangement for enjoyment, right? Otherwise it will become impersonal, I mean otherwise it will become an impersonal concept. O, He is already the Supreme Personality of Godhead why does He need that? He is already the Supreme Personality of Godhead why does He need food? Isn’t it? Why do you offer Him food then, right? Because Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Enjoyer as well and then enjoyment is experienced through the loving exchange. Enjoyment, joy and love are interrelated.

So Kṛṣṇa experienced the joy through love. And when there is love then these feelings are there. And this feeling is- you know what is there in Me that She loves so much. What kind of attraction and what kind of sweetness is there in Me that She is attracted to Me, right? Now if we leave it that Kṛṣṇa is all-knowing, then there is no room for that feeling. If Kṛṣṇa is all- knowing then where is the question of separation? If Kṛṣṇa is omnipresent…. That’s why Gopīs response to Uddhava was: “You do not know what love is”. You have the knowledge but you do not know love. Okay [Laughter], Yadurāṇī. Give it to mother Yadurāṇī.

Devotee: Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja. I just wanted to ask ….Rādhārāṇī is presenting the emotions of love [Unclear]…. told the story of Kurukṣetra, Rādhārāṇī, She is saying She cannot have the feelings, the same feelings……..

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes, good. Good point.

Devotee: So how to understand?

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: Yes good point. You see that unconditional love is there with the object of love. But here She is feeling this person is not the object of love. This Kṛṣṇa of Dvārakā is not the object of Her love. Kṛṣṇa of Vṛndāvana is the object of Her love. To Him, yes it is completely unconditional [Laughter] but not to This person.

Devotees: [Laughter]

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: That’s why who is He [Laughter]? I have never seen Him before that someone. I have never seen Him before and look at [Laughter] Kṛṣṇa’s mood. Kṛṣṇa is so happy that you know that after such a long separation He met them that His face lit up with a beautiful smile. His eyes blossomed like two fully bloomed lotuses. His hands stretched out to embrace them and in that intense feeling, He assumed this form of Lord Jagannātha. So Rādhārāṇī is feeling in a certain way and Kṛṣṇa is also responding in a certain way. And the ultimate culmination is, take Him to Vṛndāvana [Laughter] which has been very beautifully described in Chaitanya Caritāmṛta. Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is dancing in front of the ratha cart and Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is singing one song which apparently is just like a mundane love song “yaḥ kaumāra-haraḥ sa eva hi varas ta eva caitra-kshapas te conmilita-mālatī-surabhayaḥ prauḍhāḥ kadambānilāḥ sa caivāsmi tathāpi tatra surata-vyāpāra-līlā-vidhau revā-rodhasi vetasī-taru-tale cetaḥ samutkaṇṭhate“ That is although yaḥ kaumāra-haraḥ, the one who stole my heart when I was a maiden, today he is my Lord. And it’s the same spring time night of the month of caitra. The beautiful breeze is blowing, carrying the fragrance of mālatī flowers and it is made of the same maiden. We met but still my heart is yearning to go to the bank of the Revā river under the vetasī tree. So no one could understand why Mahāprabhu is singing that song. Only Svarūpa Damodar knew His heart and then after the ratha-yatra was over, one day Chaitanya Mahāprabhu went to Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī. Rūpa Gosvāmī used to live in a hut. When he used to visit, he used to stay with Haridāsa Thakur. And so Mahāprabhu came. At that time Rūpa Gosvāmī went to take his bath. No Rūpa Gosvāmī was there. Mahāprabhu was there and he went to take his bath. Mahāprabhu was sitting there and he noticed that there was a palm leaf stuck on the ceiling of the hut. So He took it out and found the verse which is saying in the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, “That my dear friend, I met with Kṛṣṇa again and I am the same Rādhā but my heart is yearning to go back to the bank of Yamunā in the forest of Vṛndāvana which is flooded with the fifth note of Kṛṣṇa’s flute.” See the Link. So Chaitanya Mahāprabhu was telling everybody: Svarūpa Damodar, Rāmānanda Rāya that how did Rūpa get to know My heart? How did Rūpa get to know My heart? And they said, “You must have bestowed Your special mercy upon Rūpa that’s why he could understand Your heart. Otherwise who can understand Your heart.” So this poetry actually is describing the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī that she met Kṛṣṇa after such a long separation but She is not feeling satisfied because Her heart is yearning to go back to that same situation in Vṛndāvana the way they used to meet. Thank you. Yes.

Devotee: You said that separation makes grow fonder and there is also this proverb ‘out of sight out of mind’.

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami: That is when love is missing [Laughter]

Devotees: [Laughter]
